What will change with the transition to Source 2

With the greatest probability, global changes are expected in the visual part, in particular, explosions and bullet marks will change. It is also believed that the new Source 2 engine will significantly improve the picture without loss of performance. On the contrary, there is a high probability that the game will start to work stably even on relatively weak systems. But you should not expect global changes in textures, because this cannot be done without a complete redrawing of the visual component, and this will take a lot of time. It is unlikely that they will go for it, especially given the thousands and thousands of skins for weapons that exist today.
Mechanics
In theory, the new engine will allow developers to make significant changes to the mechanics of the game, but such a decision is unlikely to be made, because then the players will literally have to learn how to shoot again. It is unlikely that anyone will want to make such a trip an esports component of their offspring. But the physics of grenade flight may well change and it will need to be mastered because of the new opportunities that are opening up. It is impossible to exclude the addition of destructibility to the maps, but it is unlikely that this will go beyond individual modes, in the competitive part everything should remain the same.
Game size
More optimization is expected from the new engine, and therefore the game will not require a large amount of free memory. This is especially true of cards, which have always been the main “expenditure item” of free space on the hard drive. Note that this will not only make life easier for players, but also for developers.
When cs:go switches to a new engine
It is very difficult to give an unambiguous answer, because so far everything is only at the level of rumors, desires and ideas. Recall that many insiders claimed that the transition is scheduled for 2020, but this has not happened to this day. Probably, it’s all about the amount of work, because over the years the game has acquired tons of content and all this needs to be processed somehow. Also, developers inevitably have to take into account the experience of Dota 2, whose transition was not perfect.
The next insiders, many anonymously, say that the transition is scheduled for 2021 and 2022, but this is still not one hundred percent information. At the same time, we cannot discard the option that we will not see a new engine in the old game at all, and this will be some completely different project.
